Meet the Farmer: Jack Stewart of Happy Hen Farms

At just 23 years old, Jack Stewart has already built something special at Happy Hen Farms in Nampa, Idaho. What started as a childhood project with just ten chickens has grown into a thriving local business producing free-range, non-GMO eggs from, as the name promises, truly happy hens.

Happy Hen Farms got its start 11 years ago (I was 12 years old at the time) with 10 chickens. Fast forward to today, I still carry on the same core principles of producing free-range, non-GMO eggs from happy chickens,” Jack says. “I view each year as another year to continue to improve and innovate ways that promote hen welfare and egg quality.

That care and attention show up in every step of the process. Jack personally mixes custom feed blends using grains grown by local farmers he knows and trusts. “Our hens are fed from grains that are grown by local farmers I know personally and are custom formulated and mixed by me to ensure consistent quality and the right nutrients are being delivered to the hens during all seasons of life and weather.

The hens have plenty of outdoor space to roam and barns to retreat to when it’s cold, rainy, or unsafe. “The hens are provided with both outdoor areas as well as barns to return to at night and throughout the day, also ensuring they have a safe place to stay for when the weather is bad or if other circumstances require them to be temporarily indoors (predators, avian flu concerns, etc.).

Jack has even designed and built custom equipment inside the barns to keep his flock active and content. “I’ve invested in building custom equipment for the barns that allow the hens the ability to express all their natural behaviors, from running, jumping, flying, dust bathing/scratching/pecking, as well as safe places to lay their eggs.

For Jack, the philosophy is simple but powerful: “High-quality eggs require happy hens, and that is the ultimate goal when raising the birds, starting from day one, which is to provide the birds a stress-free environment, which is what makes a Happy Hen!

From feed to flock, every choice Jack makes centers on animal welfare, sustainability, and community. The result? Beautiful, rich, delicious eggs that reflect the care and dedication behind them.

You can find Happy Hen Farms eggs right here at the Boise Co-op Market — fresh from Nampa and full of local goodness.
