Pumpkin Spice—Not Latte—Gouda

IMG_7782s.jpg

This is the third year we’ve offered this remarkable, limited-edition gouda, so we’re savvy enough to expect a few eye rolls when we tell folks we have pumpkin spice cheese. We get it. But, here’s the thing. This isn’t a sweet, cloying, dessert-in-a-cheese thing. This pumpkin spice is savory all the way.

Beemster is renowned for its nutty, buttery gouda, in fact, their Vlaskaas is one of the most popular cheese varieties we stock. Those same characteristic Dutch flavors are enhanced here with a carefully balanced mix of nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. Compare this cheese to a beautifully seasoned, baked winter squash, not a pumpkin spice latte’.

In fact, this would be amazing grated over baked squash. It would be equally delicious added to mac and cheese or gnocchi. We’re also excited to try it in a cheesy beer soup that’ll take the chill right out of a crisp autumn night. Or— holy cow!-- fondue!!!  It would make a mind-blowing fondue, with crusty bread, apple slices, and boiled red potato quarters for dipping.

It’s also a wonderfully unique cheese to simply slice and eat, or to plate up with toasted hazelnuts, dried figs, kettle chips, and sliced pears for a gorgeous, autumnal platter. Be sure to let it warm up a bit before serving. It's tasty right out of the fridge, but you’ll be amazed at how much the flavors develop at room temperature. It's like a whole different cheese.

You can go in all kinds of directions for beverage pairings here. Dark, malty lagers are a great choice, while wine drinkers will love this cheese with a Viognier or Gewürztraminer. It’s also fabulous with warm chai tea if you really want to lean into those spices!

Beemster Pumpkin Spice Gouda is $4 off per pound September 29- October 12, and once it’s gone we won’t see it again until the leaves begin to turn next fall. Don’t miss out on this seasonal favorite!
