Ryme Cellars: Winemaking For a Cause

We’ve brought in two new wines from Ryme Cellars out of California. They created Uphold Wines with the dream of contributing to causes that they valued and wanted to support. In early 2017 the couple made a decision to redouble their commitment to community. Believing that social progress cannot be left to its own devices, they desired to be greater agents of positive change. The winemaking duo decided to use their craft as a means to raise money. The bottlings includes three wines to uphold the protection of the planet, women's rights and people's equality. Every 90 days the winery will donate 100% of the net profits from every bottle of Uphold Wine sold. The funds will go to organizations that are working to defend the foundation within these three categories. So drink up, enjoy these wines and know that every bottle sold is making a difference.

The Secret of Piedmont's Power

Nebbiolo is the grape used to Borolo and Barbaresco, the powerful wines from Piedmont region, high priced and made for aging. But it can also be used to make an entry level, approachable wine that is a bit more affordable and made to be consumed young. A perfect wine for pairing with a variety of foods, such as lamb, mushroom risotto, it has flavors of cherry, coffee, anise, and earth, with grippy tannins. Here are three of our favorites in the wine shop to take home with you the next time you visit the shop.

  • 2017 Produttori  Nebbiolo, $25
Lively earthy berry fruit floats atop fine tannins and great acidity.

  • 2015 Vietti Nebbiolo Perbaco, $26
White pepper, cherry, tea, juniper and tobacco flavors dissolve into a swath of tannins that leave a grip on the finish. Though elegant, this feels more like a Barolo in profile and structure.

  • 2017 GD Vajra Nebbiolo, $23
Generous and vibrant, fresh, with reminiscence of raspberry and a hint of fresh mountain strawberry.

Valentine's Wines

Valentine's Day is approaching and a sparkling wine usually fits the bill for sharing with that special someone. So why not try a sparkling from one of our local producers? Here are a few that we carry in the wine shop:

2017 Snake River Winery Pet-Nat, $15.99

Petillant Naturel or Pet-Nat is a naturally sparkling wine dating back to the 16th century. Dry, refreshing, fruity and fizzy, it’s just plain delicious.

NV Sawtooth Sparkling Brut, $16.99

Wonderful aromas of green apple and citrus mineral notes make for a delightful start to this traditional sparkler. Our Brut NV offers bright, crisp acidity complimented by a touch of yeast on the delightfully long finish.

NV Ste. Chapelle Open Air Sparkling Wild Huckleberry, $16.99

This wild sparkler boasts vibrant huckleberries married with the crisp sweetness of apricot and nectarine.  Pair with adventure!

2017 Split Rail Daft Pink, $18.99

Daft Pink is a Dry Rosé that we injected with bubbles in the method NON-traditionnelle. With scents of lemon curd and strawberry fields forever, it's destined for life's infinite celebrations and the search for an endless summer.

2017 Coiled Rizza, $28.00

Made exclusively from the Riesling grape, it has racy acidity and exuberant bubbles that gointo a crisp, but lush balance.

Slovinian Selections

Every once in a while, someone will come in and ask for wines from Slovenia. Well, we have them, Vina Stekar, organic and delicious wines from the Goriska BRDA region of Slovenia.

2015 Merlot, $23.00

The fresh quality of fruit, with ample acidity, and lovely supple tannins, make for a remarkable Merlot to drink around the dinner table with many different cuisines. Red cherries, plums, and spices come through on the nose and on the palate, bringing an overall balance to this age worthy red that is truly spectacular.

2015 Cabernet Franc, $22.00

This Cabernet Franc is not as typical ‘lean and green’ as some of the French examples, as the fruit and earthiness are a bit rounder and fuller.  However, the character of the grape really shines through with an herbal and savory quality that is laced around dark berried fruit, plum, and soft wood spices, and finishes very long and pleasant.

2016 Sivi Pinot (Pinot Gris), $20.00

Intense on the palate with dried and ripe fruits, spicy tones, and an undertone of fresh minerality, this wine has gorgeous depth, slight grip, and well-rounded acidity.

2017 Malvazija (Malvasia), $21.00

This wine is intense on the nose, with beautiful fruit tones, robust herbal quality, and even hints of acacia flower.  It is fresh and vibrant while still being very full-bodied, harmonious in alcohol and acidity, and overall very balanced.

Walking the wine shop, we sometimes find great wines that we forgot we had. Here is a sleeper that everyone who loves good Chardonnay should try.

2013 Blue farm Gap’s Crown Chardonnay, $52.00

Very Burgundian in style, this light-bodied wine sings in bright, citrus-laden overtones, with enough length and complexity to intrigue. Rocky minerality overlays lemon pith and a delightful crispness that makes for a food friendly, celebratory selection. 92 Pts Wine Enthusiast
