The Holidays are over and the money is spent. The plastic may have cooled off but the bills are still coming in; maybe it’s time to pull in the reins a bit. For me, one of the obvious choices for a good wine that won’t break the bank is a nice Barbera from the Piedmont region of Italy. This 2014 Vinchio-Vaglio Serra is a perfect example: medium-bodied, modest stature, good round cherry fruit balanced with the hallmark crisp Barbera acidity to give it lift and freshness. Almost generic in its usefulness at the table; meaning it is extremely versatile with food. A modest wine at a modest price, perfect for my meager January wallet—a wine to drink, not to overthink.
