These are two very good wines from a little known, small production winery in Paso Robles. Winemaker Brett Urness (from Eagle, Idaho) focuses on Rhône varieties. He started Levo in 2011 after a stint working for wineries in Portugal’s Douro Valley. Of that experience he says: “I realized pretty quickly I didn’t need much else except good fruit, barrels & some siphoning tubes to make soulful wines. Since then I’ve stuck to these primitive wine making ideas.” A blend of Roussanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc, the Ember White starts with floral aromas, followed by a rich palate of honey and pear with notes of creamy lemon meringue. The Ember Red is a Syrah that offers aromas of ripe red fruits and spice, with flavors of black currant, raspberry and blackberry, followed by an elegant and lingering finish. I really recommend that you try these hidden gems.
