Saturday Wine Tasting

At the Tasting Counter in the North End Main Store

By French law, Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be released before the third Thursday of November. This fresh and fruity charmer is made from grapes that were hanging on the vine just weeks before. It’s a celebration of this year’s harvest, which makes it a great choice for the Thanksgiving holiday. This year we’re bringing in five different Nouveau for your tasting pleasure. It's your chance to try before you buy.

Uncorked! Event: Special Screening of SOMM 3

Join us for this unique opportunity to see the third installment in the SOMM Series!

The world of wine hasn’t always been the way it is today. In 1976, Steven Spurrier held the Judgment of Paris, a blind tasting where American wines beat out the classic French wines and put wine on a global platform. Wine critics like Jancis Robinson, one of the most prolific wine writers, started to influence what wine people drank. And then there’s Fred Dame, father of the restaurant wine list and the man that made the sommelier profession what it is today. In SOMM 3, these three legends of the industry sit down in Paris to taste the rarest bottles of their careers. Meanwhile, Dustin Wilson gathers the greatest blind tasters of today in New York City for a secret tasting similar to the original Judgment of Paris, with the goal to see if any of the world’s Pinot Noirs can stand up to the greatest Burgundies of France. In the end, both tastings cross with results that could change the world of wine forever.

Price includes 1 glass of wine and snacks created by the Co-op Kitchen.

Wine Class: Celebrate With Champagne!

When it comes to celebrations, nothing makes the occasion as special as the real deal—Champagne—perhaps the world’s most famous wine.

Join Divit Cardoza as he shares his deep knowledge of this historic region. Champagne, the wine, is named after the region where it is grown, fermented and bottled: Champagne, France. Nestled in the country’s northeastern corner, near Paris, the only labels that are legally allowed to bare the name “Champagne” are bottled within 100 miles of this region (according to European Law). In addition to location, Champagne also receives its distinguished name because of the grapes used to produce it. Grown in a mild climate with chalky and mineral rich soil, the flavor of these grapes is truly unique.

This tasting will include appetizers and desserts from the Co-op Kitchen.

This is one of our most popular tastings and sells out quickly, make your reservations early!

In the Uncorked!  Wine Bar

If you don't know much about the wines of Austria, don't feel bad. You are not alone. While many people are familiar with Gruner Veltliner, that's usually where it ends. But Austria is so much more. They produce some of the best Riesling in the world, typically bone dry and beautifully aromatic. And if you have never had a Zweigelt, that wonderfully fruit forward red charmer, you are in for a treat. We're offering a flight of three wines for just $10.00. Here's what you will be tasting:

Uncorked Wine Flights: Lemelson Vineyards Wine Flight

Oregon’s Lemelson Vineyards began as a dream back in 1999—a dream to create a winery that celebrates innovation in technology, sustainability in agriculture, and tradition in winemaking. Eric Lemelson started Lemelson Vineyards with the intention of building something that would not only serve our consumers, but also the longevity of the pristine state that he calls home. Utilizing organic farming methods and gravity flow production, we craft estate grown Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Chardonnay, and Riesling from some of the finest vineyards in the Willamette Valley.

Jackie Elo from Ketchum based J.W. Thornton Imports will be in the Wine Bar on Wednesday, November 7 from 5 to 7 pm to help guide us through a trio of Lemelson wines--$12 for the flight. Here’s the line-up.

  • Tikka’s Run Pinot Gris

  • Thea’s Selection Pinot Noir

  • Stermer Vineyard Pinot Noir

Wednesdays With wine

At the Tasting Counter in the North End Main Store

Chateau Maris has been creating something of a revolution in the typically conservative Languedoc region of France. English ex-pat Bernie Eden has led the charge toward organic and biodynamic farming. The winery, constructed of hemp blocks, is beyond green, requiring no heating or cooling, with a negative carbon footprint. Of course, none of that would matter if the wines didn’t measure up. They do, but drop by the Co-op for a free taste, and judge for yourself. Here's what we will be pouring:

  • Maris Minervois Blanc

  • Maris Rose de Nymphe Emue Rosé

  • Maris Minervois

  • Le Carignan de Maris

  • Maris La Touge

Uncorked Wine Flights: A Taste of Sicily

If you are not familiar with the wines of Sicily, you should be, and here’s your chance. We are featuring three exceptional wines from a pair of equally exceptional wine makers.

First up, the Voria Pet Nat from Marco Sferlazzo, a pharmacist from Palermo whose thoughts kept coming back to the smell and feel of his grandfather’s wine press. In 2002 he found and bought  35 acres of vineyard, and never looked back.

Next, Arianna Occhipinti, a burgeoning cult figure in the biodynamic movement. Arianna tends to 35 acres of olive groves and 13 acres of vineyards in the land around Vittoria, southeastern Sicily. From the beginning, she embraced the idea that in winemaking you must, “Accept the diversity of soils, the slope of the ground, the altitude, and the originality of a vineyard. To accept means to respect.” We’ll be featuring her 2016 Il Frappato, and her 2015 Tami Nero d’Avola.

Drop by the Wine Bar Tuesday, November 6, between 5 & 7 pm—just $10 for the flight of three.

Saturday Wine Tasting

At the Tasting Counter in the North End Main Store

It's a potpourri of eclectic wines this time around, with a common thread. First up, from Washington is the Syncline Subduction. The winery specializes in Rhône style wines, and this red is no exception, blending Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Carignan. Next, we move to France, for the real deal, a wine from the southern Rhône. The Saint Cosme Cotes-du-Rhone is something of an anomaly. It is 100% Syrah, while most reds from this region are Grenache based blends. Last, but not least, we venture back to Idaho, with the local winery, Split Rail's The Horned Beast (Behemoth), another Rhone style wine blending Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Should be a fun one.

New Australia with Vine Street Imports - October 24 5-7pm - $12

Ah, Australia. Known mostly by us here in the States as Yellowtail or punch-ya-in-the-face big, jammy, overripe, high-alcohol Shiraz. But a new wine movement is underway that's redefining the way we think about Australian wines. From refined, reeled-in Cabernet Sauvignons and GSMs (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre) to wines that are a little bit funky (in a GREAT way), we've been really impressed with wines from down under lately. Brian Jewell of Vine Street Imports, one of our favorite importers of Australian wines, is coming into town to show us what's up on Wednesday from 5-7p. We're pouring 4 Australian wines (okay, one is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc because it's delicious) .

Tasting is $12 per person

  • Walnut Block Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ 2017

  • Dandelion Vineyards "Menagerie of the Barossa" GSM 2012

  • Jamsheed 'Harem' Syrah 2013

  • Pyren Vineyards 'Broken Quartz' Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

We continue our tour of Europe with three deliciously different wines. Start things off with that oh-so-versatile and food friendly white from Austria, Mantlerhof's Grüner Veltliner. Then, try a taste of one of the most neglected, but most attractive of the noble wine grapes, Riesling, this one a great buy from Germany's Bex. For the closer, it's an Italian red from Piedmont, Dosset Vino Rosso, 100 per cent Dolcetto, but you won't find that on the label, as it doesn't reach the required alcohol level. Makes it a great choice as we segue into autumn.

That region's  Domaine Vetriccie Ile de Beaute Rouge is a blend of two native grapes (Niellucciu & Sciaccarellu), along with Merlot and Syrah. Should be a fun one.

Wine and food: two of the greatest pleasures in life! And who better to guide you through this Mediterranean feast than Bryan Hinschberger?

Join us for another delicious and delightful evening where you will have the opportunity to try some of Bryan's favorite dishes paired with some of his favorite wines.

Specific dishes and wines will be posted soon!

"Bon Vivant Imports is a national importer of family estate wines from Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Slovenia, based here in Boise, Idaho. After 10 years of working with incredible wineries overseas, we have a portfolio of wines that are made with minimal intervention, using eco-conscious practices (whether certified in something or not), have love and soul in each bottle, and showcase the native varietals of the land that they come from. As our name suggests, we are Bon Vivants: lovers of food, wine, travel… and all of it becomes so much more special when sharing with great people. So let’s have a class about how to do it right.

My background started in the kitchen where I have managed, head-chef’d, and started my own restaurant with my father. I’m not some NYC Top Chef… but I sure do like to cook. This class will be a blast, we'll talk about food and wine both separately, and together, and how to enjoy it all!" - Bryan
